Living in Ambato Ecuador



With a nickname of 'Tierra de Los Tres Juanes', Ambato has a cultural heritage that the Ambatenos (people living in Ambato Ecuador) are proud of. This nickname, when translated to English means Land of the Three Juans, is dedicated after the three sons of Amabato, namely: Juan Montalvo, Juan Leon Mera, and Juan Benigno Malo. The first two are writers and Malo is a known lawyer and journalist. When you are in Ambato, you will definitely see photos and statues in buildings and museums and parks named after the Three Juans of Ambato.

The city is located 136 kilometers south of the country's capital, Quito, or 47 km south of Latacunga. It stands as the capital of Tungurahua province, one of the 24 provinces in the whole of Ecuador.

Today, Ambato is a modern city and living in Ambato Ecuador means a modern life with deep cultural rootedness. It had to go through rehabilitation and reconstruction after it was hit by a major earthquake in 1949. Although the city take a little warming up to for the traveler, seasoned travelers who are looking for a place to get away from the touristy regions, cities, or provinces of Ecuador will find Ambato as a refuge. It is a quiet and very interesting place that has great views of Volcan Tungurahua, which is 5016 meter above sea-level. They are quaint and charming and it is an easy day to see them and amrvel at the colonial architecture.

An Ambato information to note is that when visiting the city, be sure to check the Monday market. This is one of the biggest and most diverse market in Ecuador.
